LOADED TRIPOD VIDEO CONTEST JULY 16th - AUGUST 16th

JULY 16th - AUGUST 16th

We will not be excepting entries come August 17th. Winner will be announced in the newsletter on AUGUST 18th.

I want to keep pushing all of you to get better at filming and editing.

These Filming and Editing comps are not about tricks but about how you shoot and edit the video. I hope you do sweet tricks in your video, but that's not what this will be judged on.

For this competition I want to challenge you all to get creative with stationary shots, shots done on a tripod. There is something very beautiful about a well composed shot. NO FOLLOW shots are allowed for this competition. So get a tripod and start having fun.

REQUIREMENTS

1) 1:30 minute video (try to get close to this length without going over): Use whatever music you want and ride ANY board and setup you want.

2) ALL SHOTS MUST BE DONE ON A TRIPOD. No movement, no motion of zooming in our out, no panning, just stationary shots. HOWEVER Focus rolls are okay, adjusting focus from one object to another. If you have movement in your shots aliens will eat you.

3) Remember you can do tricks in your video, but I will not judge you on the tricks, it is the filming and editing I am paying attention to.

4) When you are finished: Upload your video to your PERSONAL youtube account and email us a link at news@loadedboards.com. Please TITLE your video with your NAME and LOADED TRIPOD VIDEO COMP. You should get a response back that we received your video in a day or two.

PRIZES (remember the prizes should go to the person filming and editing the video, not the skater)

1st PLACE: $1million in cash…. Joking. Any Loaded Complete of your choice, a Manfrotto 3021BN Tripod, PLUS your video posted on the Loadednewsletter channel.

2nd Place: Any Loaded Deck of your choice

3rd Place: A Set of Orangatang Wheels of your choice

4th Place: A Set of Orangatang Wheels of your choice

THINGS TO CONSIDER

-Focus on a variety of angles, don’t just keep doing the same angle over and over again. Get creative.

-Have beautiful objects in your foreground. For example, have some flowers, a building structure, grass, a tree trunk, etc. in your foreground to make the shots interesting.

-Not every shot should have someone skating in it, have shots of the scenery to establish a location and then show someone skating. Focus on the small details of the environment.

-If your editing program has a color correction feature use it to make the clips look better by giving them more contrast, increasing the saturation slightly or create your own look to the video.

-Try to film on sunny days where there is good lighting. Also, the light can be beautiful around sunset and sunrise.

-Don’t rush your video, take your time and feel free to shoot it over multiple days.

-Don’t do every shot in one take. Do multiple takes of each shot so you make sure you get a good shot.

-Pick a really cool location that has unique look and beauty to it.

The Dancer is no more!

A feral panda with rabies has eaten all the Dancer decks. Yes, the Dancer is going to be discontinued folks. Cry, celebrate, do a backflip. With the death of the Dancer we have made room for a new dancing beast that will be released in a few months. The current Dancer is much fun, but it's been hard to build and we're off in other directions. We may revisit this style in the future: who knows? We have been working on this new dancer over the past year and have done extensive testing on it in the North Pole and are very pleased. It is an improved dancer with new bells and whistles to help you all put the funk in funk master. We decided 55” was not long enough and made this new beast 202 inches long. It is a bit hard to fit in a trunk.

Giving you all a release date would be too kind. Just daydream about it and we will keep you posted when it is close. For some details, think about how a ninja walks across a log and the technology behind paper airplanes.

The 2010 Maryhill Festival of Speed

A view of Maryhill from the top.

Words and photos by Marcus Bandy

The Maryhill road is said to be the first paved road on the west coast of North America. This seems plausible, but whether it’s actually true or not matters little once you actually experience this crazy place. Maryhill is unique, regardless; the licorice-black road snakes it’s way down rolling hills of undulating golden grass towards the ancient, and expansive, Columbia River. The whole scene sits in a pass—an expanse of semi-arid farmland with very few trees and a growing population of giant white windmills. The wind blows all day here, the sun cares little for your threshold for shin cancer, and when it’s cold it penetrates right to the bone. The contrast of the pitch black asphalt threading it’s way through the golden hillsides forces you to take pause—look up to a blue sky that sits omnisciently watching everything and thank whoever you thank for being present in this wild locale. Only once you’ve actually skated down Maryhill though, digging into the road’s smooth corners, feeling the winds of speed slapping against your whole bod or the strangely comforting vibrations of urethane on fast passing asphalt; only then do you fully realize how beautiful this place is—how much power the skater wields here with only a board and some courage. Those who have ridden here know these sights and feelings well—we will never forget Maryhill.

Voss Downhill Championship Recap

Words, photos and stuff by Jackson Shapira

This has got to be the most amazing week of my life. The festival here in Voss is like nothing I’ve experienced before. Many of the World’s best athletes have collected here in Norway to participate in some of the most unique and progressive sports known to man. Every day people are pushing the limits and taking their sport to the next level. To be here witnessing it, and even participating, is just plain awesome. Voss, Norway is an epic place; the scenery here is amazing, so many huge mountains, tons of waterfalls everywhere. The scenery is lush and full of color, and the people are all so friendly and really warm-up to the visitors that have come to experience this wonderful northern wonder. In the past few days we have skated some of the most epic hills I’ve ever experienced—including one hill that was an 18% degree, one-way downhill. The hill has the freashest blacktop and over 20 hairpins—crazy as all hell. It was the gnarliest road I’ve ever seen and to be able to rally down it with good mates was just a blessing. The longboarding scene here in Scandinavia is really blowing up, there were over 80 riders competing at the Voss race—some as young as 15 years old. It is no wonder these guys push the limits of downhill skateboarding so hard; they have some of the best terrain in the world to ride all the time. The top riders here in Norway are extremely talented skaters, they are all fast as hell and hungry for the win. Competing against the crew here was rad, and I was stoked to see so many people ripping it up and getting in the mix.

Time Bomb: A Peek Behind The Scenes of an Upcoming Otang video.

Check out the righthand side of this shot: James Kelly about to hug some hillside.

Words and Photos: Marcus Bandy

Downhill skateboarding is gnarly, and filming such skateboarding comes with even further elements of sketchiness and gnartacity. The fast, constant, and spontaneous motion that is Downhill Skateboarding can pose some serious obstacles for the filmmaker with the best of intentions, and skill. The concrete and asphalt jungle we skaters call our playground is a dangerous one, and requires an almost sixth sense. Those of us who ride know; anything can happen and a skater must anticipate the next obstacle—thinking two steps ahead. Filming, tech equipment, downhill pack skating, two-way traffic, and a game of high-speed Hot Potato are definitely a magical combination, but also a recipe for some serious danger-danger.

Longboard For MS

Hey skaters, here is rad skate event for a good cause. It is always nice to see skaters doing their part in the larger community. If you're anywhere near Canadaigua Lake on June 20th contact Ryan Snow, and get involved.

Beast Coast Video Contest

One of the Comet boys, Anthony, sent us this contest flier. The dudes on the East Coast are really trying to grow the scene, and this video contest is a perfect example. Check it out and join the Longboard revolution.

Mosquitos and Flares Do Not Mix.

Chris Bobino sent us over his new homemade skate vid, and as usual we were stoked. Chris has a unique take on skateboarding that emits both fun and freedom. We asked him to send over a brief synopsis on the experience of filming this new vid, and so here it is:

Words by Chris Bobino

Let's see here . . . ? The making of this video was pretty fun, which comes to no suprise because I have great family and friends. They may mess up sometimes, but it's cool 'cause I mess up sometimes. They may get distracted at the beach and leave the camera on "record", and may even erase all the previous footage; but its cool 'cause it gave us another story to laugh at, plus we found a better spot. We encountered cops that said, "You can't skate here!", but that's cool 'cause we ran into some that simply said, "Just dont break anything". I had fun making this video though, this I must say for certain. My favorite scene had to be the one with the flare, cause those mosquitos were no joke. Mosquitos and flares Do Not Mix. I mean, they were just tearing my friend Mike up. Ha ha! It was cool though—Ha ha ha!

Boarding for Education

We got a call from Ellie Ryan some weeks ago inquiring about sponsorship of an event she was coordinating in Chicago that linked the fun of Longboarding with the spreading of awareness and generation of funds for school supplies for the many students who need them. Obviously we were stoked to get involved and sent them our suport. We were excited to hear back from her a few days ago and to see the pics she sent us of the event. Check it out:

Hi Marcus,

Boarding for Education was a success! We had a great turnout and the riders really appreciated Loaded/Orangatang's sponsorship.

Radelaide Episode 3

Words by Jackson Shapiera

The scene down in Adelaid has grown so much since I first visited; the younger generation has started to pick up on the sport and are seriously ripping. There is now enough crew down there to start holding races, so Leigh decided to make the call and held a race at Eagle On The Hill--the original downhill spot for all Adelaide downhill skaters.

Radelaide Episode 2

Words by Jackson Shapiera

Later on during the week I was joined in Adelaid by my fellow Sydney Shredders: Ben Hay, Kam Kite and Luca Coleman. It was really cool having these guys come down as we all got to shred in another location, bringing out our own styles of riding to these new styles of hills, and really being able to push the limits of each other's skills and development as skaters. Leigh and Bow took us to all the gnarliest hills Radelaide has to offer, and there was lots of shredding in the skin- and the 'thane-department. We skated from 9.30 in the morning until there was no light left, and not one dull moment went by. We returned to Bow's pad for a few beers and checked out the footage and all got stoked for the next day--the first outlaw race to be held in South Australia.

First place: “Dalua” Rodrigues Da Silva
Second place: James Kelly
Third place: Kevin Reimer
Fourth place: Zen Shikaze
