Monterreal Longboard Fest 2012 Recap

ruts011 Monterreal Longboard Fest 2012 Recap

For the first time, and as a part of the NorAm IGSA series,  Mexico had the opportunity to show a beautiful mountain road to those brave enough to come all the way expecting less that what they had.

The Monterreal Longboard Fest (or as everbody called it, the “MILF”) was held in  the mountains of Sierra de Arteaga, Coahuila, in a little place called “San Antonio de las Alazanas” with no more than 250 people living in it.

The track was 3.8 km and had an average top speed from 80 to 90 km/h. At first everything was confusing, the riders of all across the world were pretty excited about the road; even Kyle Martin said that this was one of the faster and technical courses he had ever ridden.

On day one everybody went to take practice runs; everybody was able to take 3 runs due to time constraints. Sadly Dillon Stephens, one of the favorites, had a bad crash on the first hairpin, which took him out of the competition. Right away, the riders were able to take a break and have a lunch of “gorditas”, which are a mix of corn and flour, filled with meat, chorizo, cheese and a lot of other things.

After that, the qualification started. All the riders lined up and took turns to go down the hill, showing their best skills to have a good time.  Zak Maytum was the one with the best time on the first run making  3:24.085. In the second run Kyle Martin stepped up and set the time record of 3:16.067, taking the first place of the qualifications followed by Casey Morrow, Billy Meiners and Zak Maytum.

After qualis, everybody went to the center of the town where the party was taking place. All the riders and A LOT of people had the chance to hear some music and eat “Funky pizzas”.

On day two, the riders were already settled in their heats, corner marshalls were already instructed, and tons of people were waiting for some action to happen down the hill.  This day was filled with crashes, emotions, and a lot of Red Bull and Vitamin Water.

The packs were of 4,  where the 2 first places would move on to the next round. The heats were run a little bit slow, due to security problems. But everybody had the chance to race.

The semifinal had to be repeated after some incident in one of the corners had led to a red flag, so the eight riders left had to repeat their run.

At the end, the final was between Kyle Martin, Casey Morrow, Zay Maytum, and Billy Meiners. Kyle Martin led the pack all the way down taking the victory, followed by Casey, Zak, and Billy in fourth.

But the event wasn’t over because the party was just starting! Artists like  “Jesus War”, “Chico Sonido” and Tito from Molotov made the night unique for more than 500 people.

At some point of the concert, the Chiquichores Contest started, where the girls showed off their short shorts. Billy Meiners found his way up to the stage and tried to compete in the contest, and I thought he was sexier than the girls, but he was  immediately disqualified. Haters gonna hate.  The winner of this contest was Ivana (!!!!), a Mexican girl who was sexy “ass” hell. She won some new shorts, a brand new Penny, and a lot of fans.

After that Alain Carvajal and Marcus Rietema went up the stage to give the prizes for the riders. While the winners went out with some “old style” trophys and Kyle collected the check of $1000, the crowd enjoyed a lot of swag like stickers, griptape, wheels and even some mini boards courtesy of Rayne Longboards.

The party kept going until 5 to 6 o’clock, and everbody had a blast.

I would like to thank a lot of people for this event, this was an unique experience for everybody, and we are looking forward to see more riders next year.

Big thanks to all the sponsors who made this possible, to Marcus (cheers bro) and all the people who were involved in the organization: corner marshalls, judges, security staff, but especially to Les Robertson from Rayne and Claudio Uribe from Treee Longboarding, who kept the runs going and took care of the security. Big big thanks, guys!

Below you can see the final results, a video and more pictures. Congratulations to the winners, especially to the ladies.

Cheers,

Pollo.
